This week, Virgin Atlantic underscored its ongoing dedication to India with the inauguration of its new daily service to Bengaluru, along with the announcement of a second daily flight to Mumbai scheduled to commence in October 2024.

The forthcoming Mumbai flight will mark the airline’s fifth daily route to India, representing a substantial 350% increase in capacity since 2019. By 2025, Virgin Atlantic plans to provide over one million seats to India, solidifying the country’s status as a pivotal market for the airline and its most significant area of expansion outside the United States. This expansion not only caters to passenger demand but also significantly augments cargo operations, facilitating the transportation of goods from various sectors including fashion, pharmaceuticals, and technology. With the introduction of five daily services, Virgin Atlantic Cargo will offer over 40 million kilograms of cargo space to and from India, marking a remarkable 336% surge in capacity compared to 2019.

To commemorate the launch of these new services, Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss personally arrived in Bengaluru, engaging with partners and customers while immersing himself in the vibrant city. Accompanied by British Deputy High Commissioner Chandru Iyer, Shai explored some of Bengaluru’s iconic landmarks, with Virgin Atlantic’s renowned cabin crew delighting passengers with onboard treats such as ice lollies and Mile High afternoon tea.

These new services will be operated using Virgin Atlantic’s advanced 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, offering travelers a choice of Upper Class, Premium, and Economy options, including the airline’s signature Upper Class social space. Additionally, passengers will benefit from seamless connectivity and premium long-haul services when connecting via London Heathrow to destinations across North America, such as Seattle, San Francisco, and New York JFK, in collaboration with joint venture partner Delta Air Lines.

In conjunction with its direct routes to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, Virgin Atlantic has established a strategic partnership with IndiGo, India’s largest airline. This partnership enables customers to book single tickets for seamless connections from various Indian cities, including Ahmedabad, Goa, and Hyderabad, to London Heathrow, offering access to a total of 36 additional destinations. Since its launch in September 2022, this partnership has facilitated connections for over 80,000 customers.

Furthermore, Virgin Atlantic is pleased to announce a quadrupling of its Indian-based cabin crew this summer, facilitated through its GSA partner InterGlobe Air Transport. With an average of four Indian cabin crew members on each flight, the airline aims to deliver a more personalized service tailored to its Indian clientele.

Shai Weiss, CEO, Virgin Atlantic commented, “I am thrilled to be here in Bengaluru, celebrating not one but two new Virgin Atlantic services. There is a huge opportunity for us in India, it has a dynamic, fast-growing economy and we’re anticipating huge growth in demand for international travel from the region. We know both our customers and people love travelling here and we have a rich history in India. Next year marks 25 years of operations and with our new daily service to Bengaluru and second daily service to Mumbai, it will be the first time that we’ll offer more than one million seats from London Heathrow.  These new flights reaffirm our commitment to the country, allowing our customers to travel seamlessly throughout India and beyond, flying on one of the youngest fleets in the skies, with our signature service, delivered by our amazing people.”

Chandru Iyer, British Deputy High Commissioner to Karnataka & Kerala and HM Deputy Trade Commissioner – South Asia (Investment) commented, “I couldn’t be prouder to welcome another great British brand to the city of Bengaluru. Virgin Atlantic will continue to be a key player in strengthening our living bridge between the UK and India. With the growing number of Indian business travellers, tourists, and students to the UK, the addition of Virgin Atlantic to the existing air travel options would be of tremendous benefit to the entire southern region of India, and we at the British Deputy High Commission Bengaluru warmly welcome Virgin Atlantic.”

Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer of Bangalore International Airport Ltd said, “We are excited to welcome Virgin Atlantic’s new daily service from London Heathrow to Bengaluru. This marks a significant milestone for BLR Airport as we continue to enhance our international connectivity.
