Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, ‘Monkey Man,’ is set for theatrical release on 5th April, the film is expected to take a flying start at the box office, which many in the trade believe would be on par with Keanu Reeves’s John Wick.
As per BoxofficePro, the film, which is clashing with The First Omen, is expected to take a start of anywhere between US $15 to US $ 20 million in the first weekend. On the other hand, John Wick had an opening week collection of US $ 14.4 million, but that was nearly 10 years ago. The John Wick franchise has come out with two more films, one web show and talks are on about branching out the franchise with a female lead.
Coming back to Monkey Man, the film was earlier headed for a direct-to-digital release on Netflix, but producer Jordan Peele saw the film at the screening and felt it is meant for the big screen, and decided to buy it from the streaming platform. The film had its premiere at South By SouthWest film festival, where it received a long standing ovation from the audience. The film is Dev Patel’s homage to Bollywood and Korean cinema and will be releasing in 27 markets across the globe on 5th.
The India release of the film has been delayed for now, it was earlier planned for 19th April, but it might finally release on 26th April, provided it passes through the censors. The film also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash and Sikander Kher.
Monkey Man is clashing with The First Omen, which is a prequel to 1976 hit film Omen; the film is expected to take an opening of US $ 10 to US $ 15 million. However, both films are hardly expected to affect the ticket sales of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, which minted Us $ 80 million only in US during the Easter weekend, while its worldwide collection stands at $209 million.
